This backland development focussed on developing a multi-unit scheme with strict shared‑access constraints and a complex relationship to surrounding homes. The brief required the effective subdivision of a larger garden plot to create smaller, more attainable homes for younger people in an area with limited options. Design development involved testing multiple layouts and massing approaches to balance privacy, daylight and amenity while working within a narrow access corridor and tight boundary conditions. Each iteration refined how the new homes sat within the site, ensuring workable turning, servicing and neighbour relationships despite the constraints. Environmental considerations were embedded early, with Biodiversity Net Gain and Small Sites Metrics used to demonstrate ecological uplift and support a policy‑aligned planning strategy. The result was a compact, sensitive scheme shaped by feasibility testing, planning negotiation and a clear response to local housing need.
